PORT STATISTICS

Container throughput via PPAP has mostly growed from year to year. And PPAP expects to achieve 900,000 TEUs in 2030.

CONTAINER TRAFFIC AND FORECAST

PPAP began handling containerized cargo in 2002. From 2003 to 2008, the container throughput grew at an average annual rate of 44%. However, the global economic crisis caused container traffic via PPAP to decline in 2009. Fortunately, due to PPAP’s strategic location, government policies promoting paddy production and rice exports as well as the export of agricultural products, and the opening of Cai Mep Hub Port in Vietnam in June 2009, PPAP’s container traffic began to recover and saw an average increase of 17% From 2010 to 2020. In three years from 2020 to 2022, PPAP experienced a 20% growth rate respectively. However, in 2023, there was a 5% decline in throughput. As of 2024, container throughput increased by 21% compared to 2023.

According to our analysis, there are three crucial factors that have driven this continuous growth of container traffic via PPAP:

  1. The strategic locations of each terminal of PPAP, which is close to Phnom Penh, is convenient for consolidation and deconsolidation.
  2. The opening of Cai Mep Hub Port in Vietnam in 2009.
  3. The development of sub-feeder multipurpose terminals network.
