CONTAINER TRAFFIC AND FORECAST
PPAP began handling containerized cargo in 2002, experiencing rapid expansion with an average annual growth of 44% from 2003 to 2008. Although the 2009 global economic crisis caused a temporary decline, traffic recovered quickly due to strategic government policies on rice exports and the opening of the Cai Mep Hub Port in June 2009. Consequently, throughput grew by an average of 17% from 2010 to 2020. This momentum continued with 20% annual growth from 2020 to 2022. Despite a 5% contraction in 2023, the port rebounded strongly, posting increases of 21% in 2024 and 25% in 2025.
According to our analysis, there are three crucial factors that have driven this continuous growth of container traffic via PPAP:
- The strategic locations of each terminal of PPAP, which is close to Phnom Penh, is convenient for consolidation and deconsolidation.
- The opening of Cai Mep Hub Port in Vietnam in 2009.
- The development of sub-feeder multipurpose terminals network.
